Hello, another Yankee family (by way of 15 yrs out west) looking at getting back east. While we like a warm climate, Az gets a little ridiculous this time of year. We are looking to be near some lakes, not too far from the coast and other outdoor recreation. Excellent schools are important. From what I've read other then possible train and plane noise, moving to the Cary area seems a safe bet, but we are looking for a home on a nice +/-.50 acre lot up to an acre. From what I have pulled up, Wake Forest may be better, after reading all the snake, tick, termite, ant etc stories don't think I want too foresty. Looking at 4 bedrooms, 2.5 or more bath, a little privacy, open space or mature trees behind. I'd love to have a separate 2 car garage for the toys but doesn't look like what I have seen on the net would allow that. Looking for new buid. We were hoping to stay under $400k but looks like it might closer to $500k from what I've seen. Right now, I'm self employed work from home. We are coming out for the first time next week!

You can do it for under $400K, but you really have to be patient. My wife and I just bought a 3100 sq ft house (4 br/2.5 ba) on 0.86 acres with a 4-car garage (2 + 2 detached) for under $375K. It's only 10 miles from downtown Raleigh, far away from planes and trains, and about 8 years old. It took us 9 months to find this baby.

New User, you took my breath away with that one. I been looking for an older home with amenities and maybe 3 car garage inside the beltline and NADA. I am either looking too high or too low. Come on dude share the wealth.

I'll bet that you can find something similar north of Falls Lake, that is also newer, for the low $400Ks. But then you'd also have to build the extra detached garage too. Oh, and you wouldn't be 10 miles from downtown either, but I'm not sure if that matters to you or not.

We found our house in the "Swift Creek" area. This is the area of Wake county that is south of Raleigh, east of Apex/Cary, and west of Garner. We are 9 or 10 miles (as the crow flies) directly south of the RBC Center. There are also no city taxes in this area, so your dollar goes a bit farther.
