OP, I'd do some research and see if there are jobs available in your field in Raleigh, and the pay rate. I'm guessing there may be, in your field-but check. If the pay is similar to what you get in Fitchburg-in my opinion, having visited both areas-I'd think you'd be living MUCH off better in NC. But, do your research.
Red Sox/Patriot fan here. Can't answer about jobs but you CAN find a very nice apartment in Cary for the rent range you mentioned.
eloyfan gave a very good overview of costs. We've found our auto insurance, homeowners and utilities to be much much lower. We've been here for 20 months now and would NEVER go back.
