On the map of North Carolina you simply click on the county of interest. Next select a radio button indicating whether you want to see where county residents moved from or to between 2000-2005. The figures come from the IRS so it will not take into account non-filers. Also, many people arrive in NC after several moves so the data does not show county/state of birth. Interesting material nonetheless. The overall migration trends are clear.

Interesting find. I was surprised to see so many people moved from Mecklenburg Co. to Wake. They are experiencing a boom in population themselves.

Thanks for posting these -- this is very interesting. Confirms something I've suspected and said shorthand for some time.

Durham's top non-NC migrating locations are bona-fide cities: New York, Middlesex in Mass. (which includes Cambridge, Somerville, Lexington, Arlington, etc.), Cook County (Chicago), LA, Fairfax VA (metro DC), etc. Ditto for Chapel Hill.

OTOH, Wake County draws more predominately from suburban and Sunbelt areas like Long Island, Westchester County, Orlando/Tampa.

This meshes with the Triangle politically (Durham/CH are 'bluer' to Wake/Johnston's more conservative leanings) and in terms of development patterns and perspectives on growth. Interesting stuff.

No.....many people make the move back. Hawaii is expensive.....far away....a vareity of things could make one make the move....even if in many ways Hawaii is a paradise.

Some may be military also. (I believe Pope Air Force Base in in Harnett county). Not many miltary personel can afford living there after they are discharged or they are just transfered out to here.
