My husband and I went to Cafe Capistrano in Cary seeking decent CA style Mexican food after reading a recommendation from city data. I'm SOOO happy to report that it is what it says & its wonderful!!! I had a yummy margarita and the enchilada verde, my DH had shredded beef tacos. They do it right...excellent cheese & lots of it, tasty home made tortillas/taco shells/chips. The beans...which they call "smashed beans" instead of refried...I had to ask about & they said they don't use lard, they are fat free. Although not as creamy as they real thing, they were very tasty. My only complaint would be that I like salsa with a little kick, and it had none...although very fresh. I can't wait to go back & try other items...the appetizers look great too ...the menu is fairly small. For those who have been to Fiesta Grill....I'd say this place wins by a neck

just so i have a frame of reference on what you mean when you say 'CA style', where in CA are you from?

i'm always on the lookout for Mexican places that remind me of home (SD). they're few and far between, but i've been able to weed out a few gems.

North & South...born & raised near Sacramento, and lived 15 yrs in So Cal (OC) before moving here. I've had it all. I'm not saying its better than the real thing...I would kill for a burrito from a little place in Laguna Beach. But its very good....for Cary, NC.

I've asked this question before and nobody is able to give me a good answer as to the difference between CA Mex, Tex Mex, and Mex Mex.

Nice place. Have been there a few times. **edit: I mean the one off Durant, never been to Cary one**

Good food, definitely fresh.

only a couple of complaints

1. No kick or spice (even as an option)
2. Everything is drowned in Cilantro. Way overpowers everything else in the dishes.

If they could cut back the Cilantro a bit I would go back more

i don't want to thread hijack, but here's a quick list:

Chubby's Tacos
Fiesta Grille in Carrboro
Tres Hermanas in Durham, if nothing else than for the homemade tortillas.

I'll have to check this place out sometime. Thanks, twoisbetter!

Mike

I agree about the spice...I wish they had a hot & mild choice in salsa. I love cilantro, but didn't notice much in our dishes....
