I just discovered the elementary school near the house we are buying is a year round school. Do we have options (other than private school) if we do not want our child to attend a year round school? She is only 3yrs old so it is not of major conern at this time, but something we will have to address in a couple of years
In our node we have a year round base and a traditional that we can apply for (I think that's how it works). The traditional school is far away tho with a high # of free & reduced lunch students. So we opt to stay close to home at the year round base school.
You can apply for your traditional option like KellyCrash mentioned or you can apply for a magnet program. Your assignment may change by the time your little one is in school.
There are so many changes going on with the new Wake County school board, that no one really knows. But the new board has promised more attractive options for people who want to apply for a different calendar than their base school, and things should be much more clear before you have to worry about it for your 3 year old.
That being said, our family loves year-round and I'm just hoping our base school doesn't change to traditional.
We love our kids year round schedule! Best thing ever! It frees us up to travel during more affordable off-season, and the kids don't get so burned out with school. Only downside is high school if you have more than one kid cause they're trad. Calendar.

I am curious - why do you think year round is not something you want to go for?
I am not sure if we are opposed to it, but it is a new concept to my wife and I. How many days a yr to the children attend school? Is there more frequent vacations but for less time? We are coming from Connecticut and I had never heard of year round school.
I have lived here for yrs and felt the same when I first heard of it. After researching it, I decided to put my child in a YR k-5 school. We loved it! She took to it right away. They go the same # of school days as traditional calendar schools. The benefit for my child is that she seems to retain the material as she is in 9 wks, out 3 wks. There are 4 tracks, each with different vacation times, some overlap. YR allows a school to add maybe 100 more kids in a school? Can't remember the #.
I like to have our summer vacation asap each yr so we chose track 2. Some folks prefer 4 as tehy feel is it more similar to the traditional schedule. Ck out the school calendar 2009-10 to see how they do this at Wake County Public School System

They attend year round the same number of days as traditional calendar students. They go 9 weeks on, then 3 weeks off. My son is half way through Kindergarten and we love the schedule. He's on Track 1 and just tracked back in after an extended holiday break. He was off from Thanksgiving to January. We also like to travel during the spring and fall, so it works perfect for us.
