Default Tickets in raleigh

Alright I have been here for less than a month and have already been pulled over. I got nambed on 40 going 84 in a 65. They gave me a court date. I didn't realize that I was going that fast. Can anyone give me any advise on this? Also why don't they tell you how much your ticket is? Any help would be great.

If you are going over a certain speed above the limit, you can't just pay it, you have to go to court. I got caught over by the outer banks and found it easier to just hire a lawyer as the points would have killed my insurance anyway.

I'm sure someone on here knows the law better then I do, but I know at the time I weighed all my options and asked a lot of advice and everyone here said "get a lawyer"!

This is my first ticket in NC. He gave a misdemeanor charge. The cop said this is easier to get out of than if he had wrote me a different ticket? Does this sound weird?

My next door neighbors got a ticket as well recently. I think 15 over the speed limit is a mandatory ticket and court date. Correct me if I am wrong anyone.

Their ticket cost something like $160. It was $60 for the ticket and $100 for the court date.

Not sure how they handled it...will have to ask. I think they just went and paid it.

Lauren

That's why they have speedometers fitted - so you do realize how fast you are going

wow - your timing couldn't be any worse. The N and O just ran a week long expose on how lenient some speeders were being treated. Read the N and O's article and you will have a great idea of what your options are
newsobserver.com | Cops write tickets; speeders get deals

You can always use "prayer for judgment continued' which is essentially a get out of jail free card that every household can use once only every 3 years

You can hire a lawyer who will charge about $150 and hope he can plead your case down to 'improper equipment' which doesn't effect your insurance. This is one of the loopholes the state will be tightening up on. Wake county already doesn't allow this plea

You can line up at court all day and the DA will probably knock your speed down to ' under 9 MPH over the speed limit'. If you have no pre cons for speeding this won't effect your insurance.

If you plead guilty as charged you will get hammered on your insurance for the next 3 years

If I were you i'd try the prayer for judgment and keep my foot off the gas OR go to court - plead under 9 mPH and keep the PFJC up your sleeve for the next time

Your case - speeding above 55 MPH carries a 3 point penalty = 65% insurance rise for 3 years

DMV extract
n addition to criminal penalties that the court might mandate, conviction of certain traffic offenses will result in the loss of your driving privilege.

Your driving privilege will be revoked for at least 30 days if you are convicted of:

* driving any vehicle more than 15 mph over the speed limit, if you are driving at a speed higher than 55 mph.

At nearly 20 over I'd pony up for the $500 lawyer.

I heard that rumor and thought surely it was an exaggeration. This was my first and only ticket, and I had been with my insurance company ticket and accident free for 18 years. I contacted them and yes, my new payment (wait...getting the calculator...) would be 63% more The lawyer and court costs came to $400 total, so that was still $150 less then ONE year of the increase of my new insurance payment had I gotten those points.
