I realize the assignments are always changing, but this question will determine where we can hone in our search. I also realize some n-hoods are split between schools, but seems like there would be some kind of list for this - can't seem to find one!!!! Help!! Thanks!

Default Cool School maps

Have you tried going to the schools site to look at the school, then student assignments, then base node for 2010-2011? It will pull a visual map and you can see what the perimeters are for nearby base and other bussed students.

If you find a home you like be sure to go to the school site and look up the address under student assignment so as to be sure it is assigned.

BIG NOTE... do not count on anything staying the same for the following year. Sadly, it is the name of the game around here.

This is from Davis Middle:
391 Davis Drive Middle

And this one for West Cary:
604 West Cary Middle

There are also realtor sites that have search options by school assignments. I think Prudential offers that search option, and I am sure other folks can let you know if they know of any real estate sites which offer that option.

Good luck!

There is no clear cut answer to your question. It is much more complicated than a list.

If you go to the school district website you can find some info about the reassignment plan. You have to know the exact address to find the node. THen if you go to the school assigned to that node, you can see which nodes are slated to be relocated IN or OUT of that building in the fall. 2009-12 Reassignment Plan (http://ap2008.wcpss.net/assignment-proposal/index.html - broken link)

Because the Mills Park Middle School is currently scheduled to open in the fall, there will be a shift in Middle school assignment. I picked some nodes currently assigned to West Cary...some of them will be shifted to Reedy Creek Middle. Some will be shifted to Mills Park. Some from Reedy creek will be shifted to Mills Park. Etc, etc, etc. That is just a small example of what the plan entails.

Without looking at all the nodes, you can still get a sense that the end result would be that middle schoolers in Cary might be attending middle schools closer to home. But there is no good way to be sure that if you buy a home at X address, you child will be attending a particular school in Cary in the fall.

This plan is not carved in stone!!!! This can all change. Real estate websites are not going to help you right now, they will only indicate the current school assignment.

I've done a LOT of research about Cary middle schools. It seems to me that they are all pretty similar. To choose a home based on past reports of school performance or even anecdotal evidence is a little limiting...especially since once the kids are all shifted, their achievements go with them.

It may also be that when the new school opens, teachers will be shifting around also. (For example, Ms Smith is a little burnt out, and applies to the new school for a change of pace. Mrs. Jones transfers to Ms Smith's position to be closer to home, etc). In general, this plan also suggests that each middle school population will be smaller. My hypothesis is that no middle school in Cary will be quite same.

In your situation (which also might be mine if I move to Cary this summer) it is probably best to buy the home you love in the neighborhood you love and trust the universe that you child will find in place in whatever school he/she ends up in.

Here is the middle school curriculum guide for the entire district
WCPSS:Planning Guides

And here is a link to registration forms for choosing electives at each middle school (these are LAST years, have not been updated yet.)
Middle School Registration 2009-10 (http://www.wcpss.net/cass/counseling/registration/registration_middleschool.html - broken link)

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

FYI if you go to Moderator cut: Links to real estate websites are NOT allowed, per the Terms of Service you can search real estate listings by school. So simply select the school you are interested in and it will show you listings assigned to that school. of course big caveat that you should double check assignments with wcpss but I think it would be very helpful for getting the general picture of what's available.
