Anyone know of a gym in/around Raleigh that is more of an "old-school" weightlifting type of gym rather than a "health club"? I'm looking for a place that has multiple squat racks (not Smith machines or Max Racks), plenty of Olympic bars and plates, a rubberized floor, and dip/hyperextension stations. I've been to a variety of national chain franchises, many of the local/regional places, and a couple of different Y's, but nothing seems to fit "just right" yet. Nothing against all the extra amenities or the folks who like and use them, but I don't need childcare, won't use the classes or most of the machines, and can't justify paying $5 for a protein shake I can make at home. Basically, I'm just looking for my old high school weight room

Thanks for your feedback!

I'd be interested in finding someplace like this as well if anyone has any suggestions (Durham/Chapel Hill if possible, but pretty much any location could do). I want to find a gym that allows Olympic style lifts and the use of chalk (both of which are typically forbidden at most health clubs/franchises).

Look into Powerhouse at the western end of Davie Street near downtown Raleigh.

Edit -- on second thought, I'm not sure it's on Davie. Could be Martin or Harget. Should be easy to find using Google . . .

Twenty years ago, there was a bodybuilding convention or contest or something held in the Triangle. I drove the shuttle for the North Raleigh Hilton, and I transported contestants to and from a Gold's Gym up off Durant or Honeycutt Rd in North Raleigh.

This was definitely an old-school facility back then. Not sure about know however

resurrecting this from the dead...

I generally stay away from crossfit gyms. Not bashing on crossfit...They always have legit equipment, chalk, etc, but if you don't train crossfit then you have no reason to join a crossfit gym IMO since they make you conform to their workouts.

I am moving to raleigh this fall and will lift twice a week with these guys:

Powerhouse is a good one and RTP fitness (in Durham) is also powerlifter/body builder friendly.
