I am looking for a nice vacation spot for my family. Something low key thats not goning to cost a fortune. Something simple like a lake house queit days of just letting the kids outside to play. A nice family walk,fishing,etc.. Does anyone know of something like that? Please not the beach we already spend time there.Thank you!

Tons of people rent out cabins/houses at Kerr Lake and Lake Gaston (Northern border of NC right near the Triangle). I think there is a website called something close to "vacation rentals by owner" where you can find lots of such rentals.

How about Smith Mountain Lake in VA? Seems to be about 2.5-3 hours away.

Good suggestions so far. You might also consider some of the mountain lakes west of here. Lake Lure is very pretty and you've got Chimney Rock and other stuff nearby. I've camped at Lake Santeetlah, which was really beautiful with lots of hikes and other outdoor activities nearby (Joyce Kilmer, Nantahala River, etc). There are lots of others - Fontana Lake, Lake Jocassee (in SC mountains, but close to NC), etc.

we have gone to both lake gaston (the NC Side) and Smith Mountain......love them both! Smith mountain is just a beautiful lake in a beautiful setting, and a bit more rural than gaston. We went to gaston last year, and are going back again this year. If you don't have a boat, you may want to find a house with a beach area so that the kids have a place to play and get into shallow water. for us, we have our boat and the kids play on the dock and jump in and out of the water.

I found that gaston is a bit more crowded than smith mountain, but nothing like parts of Kerr or even being on falls lake in the summer.
