Woodcroft and nearby Woodlake, as mentioned by a pp, is home to many Duke folks. 20 min commute, lots of walking trails. Depending on where in the development you are and how far you're willing to walk, it's walkable to grocery stores (Krogers, Harris Teeters) and several good restaurants in the Sutton Station complexes. You would also have close access to the American Tobacco Trail, a nice walking/bike trail that runs from the ballpark downtown to just before I40, with a planned ped bridge over 40 (giving you walking access to the mall) within the next couple of years. I work at Duke Med and live just south of that area; it's a nice place to live.

Depends on what you're looking for in a hood...My wife and I, both in our late 20's with dogs and originally from the Boston area, moved to Downtown Durham. We bought a fixer upper house in the Colonial Village neighborhhod (cvnadurham.org) because we wanted to be close to the downtown life and wanted alder house in an older neighborhood with big trees, etc etc. There is a bit something for everyone in this area and depending on what you're looking for, you can find it...
