I was listening to a local talk show today when a woman caller stated she was worried about getting one. I do not know why. Southern accents, for the most part, are charming.
Unless you moved here when you were just two years old and you are surrounded by family that speaks with an accent you will most likely speak the same way your parents do.
The idea of grown adults developing accents is a bit of a stretch IMHO.
I moved here last year and at the time my family placed a bet it would only take me 6 weeks before I lost my Mid-Western accent to a Southern accent.... it hasn't happened.
It turns out I work with 3 people not just from my home state of Michigan, but who are from towns 10-20 miles from where I had orginally lived. Another coworker is from California, one is from Florida, one is from Kentucky, a couple are from Ohio, one from Maryland, another from Pennsylvania and a few others are from the Northeast region.
I joke about the bet now with my family telling them that I am more likely to have a Boston/Jersey accent than a Southern accent. I say this because since I've moved here it seems as though 3 out of 10 people I talk to are true Natives to the area. My guess is that the further away from the Triangle, the higher the Native ratio becomes.
Now....if my cubicle had been located next to my coworker 'Shannon' from Butner - Ida lost that bet quicker than lightning...

Depends on how much you practice.
