It seems like Durham has come a long ways regarding its status amongst the other juggernauts in the triangle. Once looked at as the armpit of the triangle, now with chapel hill's hype declining and Raleigh being caught in bureaucratic limbo, Durham is now the place to be (at least according to Fortune and US News) and I think the city's progression speaks volumes.

My question is: What adjective, mantra or phrase would you attribute to Durham's overall vibe at this point? In addition, how will this vibe evolve in the next 5 years?

I am just interested in what people will have to say. Please be honest. If you view the change negative people speak up.

A mantra I would attribute to the city's vibe is: "Durham: Just as funky, but way more homey"

I am seeing and have always noticed a lot of hip family oriented stuff like the zombie lurch. Cool stuff.

Durham: Local, organic, gritty, diverse, creative & authentic. What I like most about Durham is that I call it home!

Homegrown.

I'm coming up on working either at Duke or in downtown Durham for 16 years now, and it is amazing how the downtown redevelopment has been primarily driven by local businesses and interests. I'm sure it will end soon enough and we'll start to see the kitschy upscale national chains start to be spinkled in (Mellow Mushroom doesn't quite count, and I'll take it over california pizza kitchen anyday), but hopefully this tradition of domination by locally developed business will continue.
