I have learned lots from some great Raleigh folks, thank you. Here is my last question I think until we come for a visit in a few months.

Does it cool off in the evenings or stay about the same temp. in the summer? Is the hot & humid can't open the windows season last from May - September? That is what it is like here in Atlanta just thought I would see if maybe it has a "bit" shorter season in Raleigh.
Thanks

It's similar to Atlanta - maybe just a few less days of "hot," but not that big a difference.

No, it does not cool off in the evenings here from May through September enough to open windows in the evening or night.
If you do, you'll just be inviting humid air and insects inside.
It's not fresh air by any means.
Even with a fan in the window, you'll just be adding warm humid air.
Annoying, it is.
best,
toodie

Yes, you can open the windows at night, late winter, spring, fall, and a few days in summer, we get great nights. Once you get to the middle of summer the heat and humidity can stay around all night, so you have to keep things buttoned up.

Raleigh is much farther north than Atlanta - the weather is cooler as a result, but not drastically so.

Our highest lows in the summer stay under 80 degrees, but it may take all night to drop below 80 degrees. There are some summer nights that are just oppressive and you can have the A/C running all night. I guess it really depends on how much you like the heat I guess?

Yes we are further North than Atlanta, but we can get much hotter than Atlanta. There is always a piedmont core from about Columbia to Raleigh to Richmond that can go for stretches into the 100's for several days.

The climate difference that would come from the variance in latitude between Raleigh and Atlanta is made up for by altitude. Atlanta may be further south, but it is also at a higher elevation than Raleigh. If you look at the "climate graphs" for Atlanta and Raleigh right here on City-data they are almost identical.

Yes, it does cool off in the evenings here from May through September. We often open our windows in the morning during cooler days to let some fresh air in the house. With 2 dogs and a baby, we need that fresh air! Then, once it gets closer to lunch and the house starts to warm up (~80 degrees), they get closed again and the A/C turned back on. I would not open the windows in the evening as the humid air would make it less comfortable to sleep. Plus. . . . we have a gajillion of those dang little peeper frogs and the noise would keep us up.

No it doesn't cool off in the evening in summer. It's warm early morning and late. In fact it is usually warmer after 4 pm, not cooler.

The temperature cools off somewhat in the evenings during late spring and summer, but the humidity will still be a problem, so unless your A/C is broke, I'd recommend keeping your windows closed anyways.

I think you're going to have to decide for yourself.
