Would someone be able to tell me what high schools were there for people who lived in Raleigh around 1962? I'm trying to help someone out in the People Search section. Thanks.

Would that be the only one at that time? Looks like there are around 8 now.

Enloe was founded in 1962.
the old Millbrook High School was probably around then.
Cary High School was moved to its present location in 1960.

Thank you both for your responses. I do appreciate it. I'll check the map to see which is the closest to the original downtown Raleigh.

I wasn't living here then but was heard of a Hugh Morson (or Morrison?) school. Was that a high school in downtown proper?

Enloe opened in '62 as the first integrated HS, and Aycock a couple yr later per this site William G Enloe High School - Raleigh, North Carolina/NC - Public School Profile Which HS's were for the black students before this?

Francois/Poggly - need your input!

PS-just did a search for Hugh Morson, it closed in '55. This site has some neat info about it and other stats including that Ligon was a HS at that time.http://goodnightraleigh.com/2008/05/...f-high-school/

Enloe opened it's doors in the 1962-63 school(grades 7-11) First graduating class was in 1964. Ligon High School was also open at that time(all black) and of course Broughton was open. Morson High School had already turned junior high by that time.

Sanderson was opened I think. Its in North Raleigh.

You could also search through classmates dot com too. They may have some info.

RaleighLass, that was way before my time! I wasn't even born in 1962!

But remember that this would have been during segregated schools, so it would matter whether the person is black or white (to put it bluntly). Broughton would have been the "white" school for most of the city and the "black" school may no longer exist.

ecam222, do you know what part of town they lived in?

There may be a historical section on the Wake County schools site somewhere, though in 1962, there would have been separate "Raleigh city" schools and "Wake County" being everything outside of town, with "town" being all "inside the Beltline" as we know today.
