It really depends on what you want to do. For instance, do you have a passion for working with children, the homeless, building homes, or providing career advice? Those are just a few areas where it's possible to contribute your time. I'd think about what it is you most care about, where you would like to make a difference. And then it's quite easy to look online for organizations that work locally in those areas.

ReTails, a thrift shop in Raleigh that gives 100 percent of its profits to low-cost spay/neuter programs, is always looking for volunteers.

It's a great group of people.

Pet overpopulation is a huge problem throughout NC. You would definitely be doing some good.

SO many options--what were you looking to do? Stuff envelopes? Build houses for the homeless? Make phone calls? Help with arts organizations?

Really, any and every nonprofit can use help of some sort in these times, with donors decreasing even as need for services increases. Think of what "realm" you'd like to help with (health issues, animal issues, children's issues, arts issues, minority issues, etc), search for some charities in the area related to that, read their missions, and then contact them. I would be amazed if ANY of them told you they didn't have a need for volunteers at some level!

This is a one-day event, but we are seeking volunteers for the 8th Annual New Balance Girls on the Run 5K & Fun Run Presented by Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center on Saturday morning, April 17, 2010.

This event is the principal fundraiser for GOTR and serves as the culminating event for our 12-week after-school program. GOTR is a character building program for 8-12 year old girls that uses running and walking to teach important life lessons that lead to a more empowered, confident and healthier outlook on life. This year's event promises to be bigger and better than ever as we work to make it a spectacular day for girls and their families, neighbors and friends, students and residents, casual joggers and competitive runners in the area. The start and finish line for the 5K will be at the American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham, and the family fun festival with games and activities for kids of all ages.

Register here (and invite your friends!): http://www.sportoften.com/events/eventDetails.cfm?pEventId=4493.

Meals on Wheels. Food Bank. Help feed old people in assisted living facilities at lunch time. Some have tremors and can't hold a spoon w/out spilling their food.
