We had a terrible infestation with sand/fungus gnats (they go by many names) last year. They got into our house plants and were indestructible! We tried everything but at the end only a generous portion of beneficial nematodes combined with sticky traps finally took care of those nasty buggers. Horrible, horrible things. If you have any plants - beware!
I have them right now because I bought a big potted plant and then overwatered it. It wasn't getting enough sun to dry out the potting soil fast enough.
I have sticky traps out and I haven't watered the potted plant in a month. I'm waiting for it to get warmer out so I can put the plant on my screened in porch for more light and air, so it dries out.
For cats, water diffusion is preferred, provided the door is open so the cat may leave the room if they wish. Not for topical or internal use with cats.
