Just wait till they chnage I-540 to I-640, then we will all be screwed up!!!
That would have happened under the original plan, when the entire loop (when completed) was to be designated as a federal Interstate. But since the southern portion of the loop is now to be a state route/toll road (designated as NC540), the I-540 designation for the northern portion will still be appropriate.

Too true. Sad that we missed the opportunity to have I440 and then I640 as successive loops around the city ... as opposed to I540 which would appear to be a spur by its odd number designation, but really isn't, just so we could toll it easier.
"ITB" I first heard about 2 yrs ago from a young friend. She said that many of her friends' goal was to marry, have kids, drive volvos and say they live "ITB".
My local friends refer to this area as the Old Raleigh section, (before someone came up with OR). Meaning not necessarily for wealth but old homes with character. Decades ago, there's weren't too many old Raleigh residential areas. When I moved here in '74 it had pockets of higher wealth areas (wish I could stop using this term), such as Harvey St. sections of Fairview, Oberlin, etc., and lots of rentals, and small 50's ranchers like Bernard St. And the homes in-between, regular folks, regular jobs, home prices reasonable. Who'd have thought it would be what it is today. Now those run-down rentals look so homey and cost a fortune!
I know someone who purchased a big 2 story columned home for around $40k in the early 60's, of course it's now worth significantly more. I'd say they made a good investment choice.
So now it's 440 E & W? Wasn't it like that for a brief time before the inner/outer 440 beltline name?
I only wished they placed the signs for such a major road 50 ft from the turn, not right next to the turn, seeing as the sign is about the size of a sheet of paper.
My quick 2 cents. ITB is not just rich people. East Raleigh has a whole bunch of neighborhoods for working class people that go to magnet schools. It's home for me for the same cost as renting a 1 bedroom apartment in Cary when I first moved here. Works for me, and trust me. I'm not rich.
Calling the beltline I440 east and I440 west seems like it makes it about 100x more confusing. Inner beltline and outer beltline always made sense to me, I never understood all of the confusion over it. Depending on where you are on the beltline, you can be traveling either East or West on either side....which one is "East" and which one is "West"?
Maybe, but this brings it line with standard Interstate naming conventions so it shouldn't be too complicated. I think it is I440 East if you are travelling West to East and I440 West if you are going the other way.
I think the best way to think of it is in terms of where the road is actually taking you, not the direction it happens to be going in at any particular section.

That's what has me puzzled.
Snobbery in its various forms, comes about from where a certain group/class of people live and that such areas are smart, have charm, have quality properties and roads, views/scenery and natural attractions like mountains, rivers, lakes.
With having both very pretty and very grubby areas ITB, what's the actual kudos of living there and telling people that you do, like a badge of honor?
I know there is a country club ITB and some cute roads and houses in the roads bordering the North Hills area (which are very quiet and no doubt the homes are expensive), but what else, exactly, is there in this area as I can't understand the benefit of claiming that "status".
Is it perhaps to do, in part, with a rejection or protection from the "other side", of which the ITBers do not approve of?
