"Why not just east/west,or which ever direction it runs.Is it still going to be called 440?"
that makes sense to me. 440 runs E/W and so does 40. the little section of 440 in the southeastern area that sort of loops around doesnt matter because i never drive over there.

You know what,if it keeps me from ending up in Cary, when I'm trying to get to Wake Forest,I'm all for it.
I'm wondering how this will work out for Raleigh. When I lived in DC, I know that people got confused while following directions because "south", "west", etc. were confusing or counterintuitive depending on where you were trying to go. The clearest, in my opinion, was using the terms Inner Loop and Outer Loop. That at least allows a person to visualize which way they're going instead of the directional names that change as you go around the circle or make no sense ("north? But I thought we were heading east? Which lane am I supposed to be in???").
It runs in a damn circle. One minute your going east, the next minute south, then you're going west, etc...
Actually, it's more like a semi-circle that starts on the west side of Raleigh, loops through the northern suburbs, and ends up on the east side of Raleigh (if you are looking at a map, left to right). That's why the East West labels make the most sense.
Of course, it helps a lot if you have a basic map in your head to refer to. Otherwise, just get a GPS.
