Interesting that you say a lot of the students homeschool their kids. Not something I'm keen on as we have an only child who is very sociable and thrives on being around other kids - so not an option for us. Am I right in thinking it's older housing near the Seminary as opposed to new builds? We're looking at renting initially for the first year. Are there many house rentals in that area? Thanks.
The area around there is basically the historic area....all that is in walking distance. There should be rentals though.....not sure what the price range for those would be. There is a housing office at the seminary (had a friend work there as a temp for a very short time) that should be able to help you.

I am surprized that you would not think most would homeschool their kids....the SBC has been saying for years to pull their kids out of school and homeschool or send them to a Baptist school....and not all can afford what a good private school costs. The Seminary students and their families very much keep to themselves for the most part. You'll find plenty of businesses that cater to the Seminary....but it's very much seperate.

I admit to being shocked that someone on staff there would send their kid to NRCA....a good school no doubt, but it's not Baptist.

Desdemona - thanks again for the info. So from let's say from somewhere within walking distance of the Seminary to either of the schools - is it a straightforward route on the highway - I'm afraid I'm seriously geographically challenged when it comes to trying to get anywhere - so the simpler the better!!! I also read that car pooling is big in NC for schooling - is that how your daughter gets to school or is there a bus. I've noticed that a lot of the private schools just don't do the bussing thing unlike here in Canada. Mind you, they're not big on it in the UK either. Thanks

My daughter goes to public school.....we have bus service. I don't know of any private school that has bus service...though I am sure there might be one somewhere.

And carpooling in NC doesn't always mean 'sharing a ride' though it does happen. "Carpool" normally means the very orgainzed and strictly controlled in most areas, pick up and drop off dance that parents go through each day.

It's mostly straight forward to NRCA...Trinity would take some turns. It does get easier. Just keep a map in the car and you'll do fine.

I don't know of any, and cannot think of any in wake forest, but someone else might know!

On a side note, where are you in canada? My dad's family moved from glasgow to canada years ago.........and there is someone on the board who I helped find a house in wake forest and they are scottish, but have been in the states for 7 years! The scottish accent reminds me of my grandpa!!! love it!

Desdemona - you're a wealth of information! In response to your previous post about seminary students - I'm interested to know how the Seminary is viewed by the WF community in general and why do you think the families connected to the Seminary keep themselves to themselves? Can't imagine myself ever fitting into that scenario - the more people to meet the better and from all walks of life. Sounds a bit insular to me.

Leigh - how fantastic to hear there's another Scottish person living in WF!!! We live near Toronto at the moment - and my dad was also from Glasgow - and I myself was born between Edinburgh & Glasgow and my mum was Welsh - so I'm a true Celt through and through!!!! Talking of accents - I really do LOVE the NC accent - I could listen to it all day long!!!! On the Scottish note - my dad used to say there are two types of people in the world - the Scots and those who wish they were!!!!!!!!! Not quite sure I'd agree with that, but I'm proud of it anyway!!! I'll hopefully get an answer about the Thai food - my favourite!!!

The feeling I get is that the seminary is conservative, biblically conservative and they want their students/families to be the same. It seems (based on what I have heard) that they take a more fundamental approach than let's say a divinity program. So, that can be isolating within a community that may not be as conservative. I don't live near downtown, so I cannot speak for the climate in that area. I always see people with their kids walking around the historic areas and the downtown area, so obviously people are out and about.

My dad's family immigrated to winnipeg, but now live in toronto, calgary and vancouver.........my dad had the canadian accent but my grandpa had that wonderful scottish accent. My sister went to the university of aberdeen for a semester (my mom went there for a year). Cool, and good luck with the thai, it is not my favorite so that is why I haven't noticed any places around!

Desdemona - thanks for the heads up on the carpool thing. Amazing how the same word can mean different things to us!! As for the keeping a map in the car - I'm afraid I'm really diabolical at map reading!!! - and my husband will testify to that!! But we have a GPS in the car so that should help me out just fine! Sorry to keep coming back to this, but do you have major problems with ticks down there!!! Don't think I'd even recognize one if I saw it!!!

Leigh - before we considered NC as a place to move - we considered going back home and to Seminary in Aberdeen!!! Don't know what your sister thought about it, but my memories of Aberdeen on the 2 visits that I've made there, are of very friendly people but miserable weather!!!!! And it's bitter cold too!!! I reckon the NC climate would suit us a lot better! Re the Seminary - interesting to hear other people's perspective - my husband would be studying only part time there - we have our own internet business so would not be isolated just within the Seminary. Really lookiing foward to visiting. Have a feeling we'll be falling in love with the place!
