I went to the Raleigh State Farmer's Market today and was happy to see loads of vendors selling vegetable plants like tomatoes, peppers, cukes, corn, watermellon, lettuce, squash ect.... They also were selling tons of herbs and various flowers. Not as many food (Veggie vendors) yet, but I suspect that their numbers will grow in the upcoming weeks as more things come in season.

I found a guy selling herbs in 4-plant packs for $1.50. I picked up cilatantro, oregano, english thyme, dill, and chives. I also bought a nice spearmint plant for $2.50. There was tons of basil and other herbs as well.

Planting season has arrived!

I was there on Saturday - great stuff. Planted my flowers yesterday - 2 trays of pink impatiens around my trees in the front and a dill, thyme, basil and lemongrass plant came home with me! Careful planting basil though - it's super tender and doesn't do well under 40 degrees.

I have found the farmers market a better place to buy them - they're fresher, they're watered, and you can bargain with the farmers - This is especially possible later in the day when they are fixing to go home. If you show up at about 4 or 5 you can get some great deals. So if the listed price is $12 for a flat of flowers, you might ask if you can get 3 for 30 or whatever. I've found most of them amenable to this. The variety you can find is also way better, and you can ask questions (provided there aren't a zillion customers waiting to pay ) and get good answers regarding pests, fertilizer, where in your yard the plant will grow, etc.

NRG, what do you have in your SFG? The lettuce is obvious, what else is there, cukes, scallions?

I got a 3 gallon azalea at the farmers' market last week for $10. At Cary Garden Supply (which I LOVE), the same was $20 and at another place in Durham was $13. So, yes, the deals are pretty good. I may swing by there tomorrow.

I prepared my beds, but I need to fence it to prevent the DOG from ravaging the plants. I'm also waiting for some seedlings to be ready to go outside and for the temps to come up before putting my peppers in the ground.

But I need a lavender plant and one more pink ruffle azalea if I can still find one. And some hostas...and I am sure there are many other things at the FM that would catch my eye! I love that place.
