I am planning on proposing to my girlfriend this summer and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the most romantic/scenic outdoor places to propose in and around (hour drive) the Triangle.

Places I was thinking: Raleigh's rose garden, Sara P Duke gardens, sunset on lake Jordan (but where exactly?)

thoughts?

Default thoughts

I love Duke Gardens, there are some spots that you feel like you're in your own private little world.

One other option to scout out is Ayr Mount in Hillsborough, website here:
Classical American Homes Preservation Trust

and a few pictures here, about 2/3 of the way down:

I'll be interested to see what others post, I'm a sucker for a scenic spot.

Good luck to you!

I was going to suggest Grandfather Mountain, but that is 3+ hours away.

I came across this in my google search -> Above & Beyond Hot Air Balloon - Raleigh, NC, 27609 - Citysearch

I have not used them though, so have no clue if they are good or not.

As far as Jordan Lake.... I am not sure where a good place way, but maybe a sunset kayak adventure?

Good Luck and Congrats!

Ebenezer Recreation Area at Jordan might be a good spot. I'd also consider a ride to Wilmington...carriage ride, or perhaps a dinner cruise?

HORSEDRAWN TOURS WILMINGTON, NC

Scenic Cruises, Weddings, Receptions, and more on the River in Downtown Wilmington NC

I'd opt for early summer...Wilmington can be kinda sticky in July.

I have no ideas, as I'm planning my first trip there as we speak, but I couldn't resist congratulating you and wishing you both great blessings together.

DON'T DO IT!! Oh sorry that wasn't the advice you were looking for.
I like Duke Gardens, like someone else said there are places there that are extremely private.
I don't think Jordan Lake is particularly scenic, and on a summer evening at sunset I think you would be getting attacked by mosquitos - not very romantic.

If you want a sunset on Jordan Lake, rent a canoe and put in on the arm of the lake just south of where 751 crosses the lake. Put on about an hour before sunset and paddle north across the lake, towards the large inlet. Every time I've gone there at the end of the day we've seen half a dozen bald eagles along the northwest side of this inlet, and you'll get a pretty sunset and few if any other boats around. Winds are typically low in the evening as well.

I second going to the ocean. I don't think anywhere in the Triangle can compare to being by the sea.

At Lake Johnson, there is a really pretty walking bridge over the lake, and also a deck with rocking chairs on it facing the water. Both are beautiful spots IF you can go at a time where they aren't crowded (read: not weekends) so you will have some privacy. They also rent canoes and rowboats there... it could be sweet to be out on one of those and propose to her in the middle of the lake. Duke Gardens are beautiful, but I'd go a week before the event to scope out exactly where you want to do it to see what's blooming, and also because I got severely lost there this past weekend (I suck at maps) and the last thing you want is to be searching for the perfect spot with her there.

This is kind of going the opposite direction from what you asked since it's not outdoors, but: Arthur's Top of the Tower on the 20th story of the Clarion Hotel in Raleigh has a pretty darn good view. After dark, it's pretty romantic if you ask me.

The food is decently priced and pretty good, though far from the best Raleigh has to offer. If you or your significant other are pretty average in your tastes you should be able to find something you'll like. You'll find the menu on their website.
