Hi everyone,

I am very confused on the issue of year round vs. traditional. Do they give parents a choice for this?

sickof jersey - If you google the issue there are lots of articles to read. I still am not completely clear on the issue but it did help somewhat. I'm in Jersey too and thinking of making the move to NC. Where do you live? We're in Essex County.

From what I understand there is an application period in February when you can apply online at WCPSS.net for your Traditional calendar option school for the following year. it is also the same application for magnet status. I am not sure about students moving here after that period. There is a court case between parents and WCPSS that has not been decided yet. WCPSS does not want parents to have the choice, so if the decision comes in favor of WCPSS before you move here, then no you will not have the option. Your best bet is to go to Wake County schools website and contact them by phone or email with your questions.

Can you post specific questions and maybe we can help?

As for the question of do they give parents a choice? Yes, but there is no guarantee you will get your choice. Everyone has two choices...do nothing and go your base school assigned to your address for that year. Or, if you don't like the calendar assignment of that school, you can choose to apply to your calendar option school...there is a deadline for applying each yr. Again, there is no guarantee that you will get your calendar option.

I'd love to make it easier, but it is complicated. My family, for example, when we moved in we chose the calendar option because we wanted to go to a yr round school. We applied, were accepted, and have been there 2 yrs. But now they have converted a school to yr round that is closer to our house, and we have now been reassigned to that school...it is now our calendar option for yr round. So off we go to a new school next yr. Do I like it? No...but the simple fact is that the school is closer to our home and 2 yrs ago it was traditional, so thats why the made the adjustment this yr. Its a good school, so we haven't complained and we are going with it...3 yr for sure (they say). But my kids are getting older and if they do it again, we may not adapt so easily....
