I was inspired by a brief beer conversation with New User and this fantastic weather we are having.

What is your favorite local beer? By local I mean the state of NC - from the mountains to the coast.

To get the tone started, on draft I am a huge fan of Red Oak. I love the flavor of their unpasteurized lager, and will usually order it anywhere it is on tap. Additionally, I think the fact that they can't/haven't bottled it adds to its allure.

If we are going bottled, my favorite in the state is Highland Brewing companies, Gaelic Ale. It is a crisp and slightly nutty Amber Ale that never fails to satisfy.

The Carolina Brewing Company: Brewer's of Tasty Liquids
Fuquay-Varina, our version of Sam Addams, someday. An excellent variety and a nice Saturday afternoon tour.

I agree with DP when it comes to NC draft beers. Red Oak is the way to go.

What happened to Cottonwood?? I used to look forward to their Pumpkin Ale every October.

Not to bust the allure of Red Oak Draft, but I purchased it in bottles the other week at Total Wine on Capital. Still a great beer,

Lonerider's Deadeye Jack is my absolute favorite, and their Shotgun Betty is my wife's
We also really like Big Boss's Bad Penny and Helles Belle

Ha! I used to be the head chef for them when they first started brewing. Back then it was still called tumbleweed grille, and they only sold in the restaurant. Cottonwood came later due to conflict with the name (was already being used)

Bart Conway was the original owner/proprietor of the beer and the food (both were excellent, even if I am a bit biased). He is out of the business now, but he is the owner/proprietor of Canyons in Blowing Rock. THey also serve many good, local brews.

As to the original question:

I'm a big fan of anything CBC (Carolina Brewing Co), as they have AWESOME Beer, and they are great members of the community, giving back in many ways. All around, an company I like to support. Their CPA (Carolina Pale Ale) is very good.

On the other end of the spectrum, Cottonwood Low Down Brown is good (and as far as I know, still available).

Big Boss Coffee Stout - my two favorite beverages in one

Bad Penny is very good too.

Remember the World Beer Festival is next Saturday in Raleigh (err, lame attempt to keep this thread here :-) )

Funny coincidence...I was speaking with a sales rep from Long Beverage today and was asking him about local beer. He said that the local brewers are pricing themselves out of the market and that they are phasing them out and going with more Craft beers from Colorado. Sad
