You can easily lose your deposit when you deal with amateur landlords even if you go through a rental agency.
Professional apartment communities follow NC law and escrow your security deposit in a bank. They may not co-mingle these deposits with their own monies.
Amateurs may spend your money and not have it to refund when you vacate. They may also file Chapter 7 bankruptcy where creditors usually get no recovery. They may also try to steal your deposit with phony damage.
Now, I'm a tenant by choice but helped my father-in-law when he was an apartment super. I fully understand what a bad tenant can do and how collecting damages is usually a futile effort.
I recommend renting an apt from a professional corporation where you have some recourse within the firm as well as money deposited into escrow.
By the way, apt. deposits tend to be ridiculously low here.
