The FCC approved the previously announced sale of Verizon Communications landline assets to Frontier Communications last Friday. Included in the sale are all Vz landline assets in NC (predominantly Durham/RTP). The sale is now expected to close July 1st.

I assume this is a good thing?

What does this mean in layman's terms?

At least in the near term, probably nothing more than you sending your payment to a different address.
Some would argue that a company like Frontier will show more interest in rolling out new services in "smaller" markets like Durham. Others argue that companies like Frontier will never have the capital to invest in these services. The track record of the companies that have bought Vz properties in the past is not so great.

I used to meet frequently with the IT Director at a major University in the Southeast that was located in the legacy GTE franchise. After Bell Atlantic purchased GTE he remarked "I liked it a lot better when I was a big fish in a little pond as opposed to being a little fish in a bigger pond". Go figure.

Frontier is not exactly known as a great phone company already. I imagine with the expansion, they will be stretched. I used to wish I was served by Verizon instead of Bellsouth/ATT, now I'm glad I'm not.

It seems every service company nowadays, especially telcos, has one shortcoming or other.
Has anyone created a grid to compare services?

Where have all the honorable people gone?
