Wow, my very first post.. This forum is a great resource.

I moved here from Philadelphia a few years ago. In Philly, I used to subscribe to Angie's List and found it very useful. I did not renew my subscription when I moved here.

Now, I am considering using it (for the Raleigh/Durham/CH area) and want to know if any of you are currently using Angie's List and if so, what has been your experience? (good/bad etc.)

Thank you.

I've used it with good results. I also use this board as a source, and crosscheck on Angie's List. I guess it's overall usefulness depends on what kind of contractors you are looking for and how many. I haven't found it as useful for window installers (my current project) because some of the companies I'm looking at are very small and have no reviews posted. I found a great tree guy on it, and was happy with the carpet cleaners I used as well. Thinking about it, I really should post some reviews on Angie's List, to help make it more useful for other people!

I use it all the time for house and yard stuff, also with good results. I've never used the medical ratings, because I have an issue with the average person's ability to critique medical providers.

ETA: I've just about stopped asking for recs or opinions on this forum. Every time you do, 80% of the posts are people telling you how you can / should do the work yourself or criticizing what you're going to have done. Too much chaff and not enough wheat.

I have not used it. I've done just fine with asking on City Data, using Insider Pages and sometimes even asking my neighbors the old fashioned way.

Insider Pages seems to have a ton of fake reviews - I know when I was looking at spas there were some that just had one 5-star rating after another, all made on the same day. I do like that on City-Data there is the limitations on referrals from new members. I think Angie's List is good if you need multiple referrals and want to save some time.

True! But they seem to stand out like a sore thumb. If I was doing a major renovation or something I might have more of a need for Angie's List. I'm frugal and haven't felt the need to pay for the service so far.

we stopped paying for it as we felt word of mouth with friends, neighbors and city data was good enough for us.
