We are a young couple moving from Miami and looking for a house to rent. Do you have any other advice as far as neighborhoods go. We're looking for:

-house, fenced yard
-nothing too large
-safe neighborhood
-not far from Duke (our work)

Does this make any neighborhoods jump out in your mind?

Thank you so much,

John and Kim

A few of my professors live in Trinity Park, which is very close to East Campus. I'm not sure what the rental market is like in TP, although all the houses I've seen match your criteria.

Define "not far from Duke". Do you want to be able to walk to one of the campuses, or is it a 5-10-20 min drive?

If you're looking to be close to Duke, the most popular neighborhoods around the university that also have significant rental housing stock are Old West Durham, Trinity Park, and Trinity Heights. Walltown also has significant stock and has a growing number of grad students at Duke living there, though it's historically a more transitional neighborhood.

First, thanks everybody! This board makes a daunting move a little less daunting.

No need to be able to walk, anything within a 15-20 minute drive is fine with us.

Thanks!!!!

Oh yes, and we should mention that we'd like to keep it in the thousand dollar or less range.

Why do you need a fenced yard? Are you bringing pets?

15-20 minute drive includes all of Durham, and a good chunk of Orange County including most of Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. Judging from Craigs list, you probably can pick your area and then find a 2-3 bedroom house with a fenced yard for under $1000 without a problem. Here's some options you can choose from:

1) Walking distance to 9th street/east campus/downtown.
2) Bigger yards up in north durham or out cole mill Rd.
3) South of downtown down towards Woodcroft...some cool old funky places, and alot of cookie cutter neighborhoods. Also the whole Southpoint incorporated complex.
4) Orange county between Durham, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough...rural, lots of woods, hiking, often cheap rents if you are looking a the right time. I've lived in this area for 13 years, for the first 10 I was 4 miles from duke and a 7 min commute, off Mt Sinai Rd.

If I was to do it all over again, I'd either choose #1 or #4. Walking everywhere would be nice, but it sure is also nice being out in the country.
