I am a resident of Durham (near Southpoint) and we love the area; however, we are looking for a larger home and also hoping to move into a better public school district. We have looked at several neighborhoods in Cary off 55, such as Cameron Pond, Cary Park, Highcroft. Anyone have any thoughts on that area and the schools? The homes are beautiful; however, we felt as if they were sort of in the middle of nowhere. Is Cary planning on expanding the commercial aspect of that area? Do homeowners in that area feel isolated or is there a lot to do and a good neighborhood atmosphere? Thanks for the advice!
Well, it has come a long way in the last couple of years. When we moved here the Cary Park shopping center was not here nor the shopping or dining options at Davis Drive/Morrisville or Davis/High House. We bought here with the promise of continued growth and it is indeed growing.
Near O'Kelly Chapel and 55 will be a huge complex called Alston Center, slated to have Super Target among other stores and restaurants. There are several parks planned for the area as well for additional recreation opportunities. There is a historic district planned just off of 55 and Carpenter Fire Station - that plan is still with TOC, but sounds pretty interesting.
The good news is that it is planned growth so you won't see standard suburban blight in the placement of strip malls, intead more clusters of shops in one area.
Since you mention you have children, you can't go wrong with any of the schools or neighborhoods in the area - they are zoned well and are loaded with families.
It is a great area to raise a family and easy access to all the areas you may want to get to such as Brier Creek, RTP, RDU airport, Beaver Creek, Chapel Hill, I-40, 540 and even Southpoint! It is a little sleepy, but enjoy it while it lasts, there is plenty to do and easy access to anything out of the area. Good luck with your decision and let us know when you settle in!
.
Here is the Alston Regional Activity Center plan link in case you want to look at it. I wish it were already open, but it should be awesoem once it is!
It is going to be interesting how things change once the toll road opens up. It is amazing how fast they are busting it through. At least as a prospective home buyer you now know exactly where it is going to be. The road is really driving a lot of development. It is not going to feel isolated out there for very long.
This is a great area for families. I don't think you could go wrong moving into the general Cary Park area. What seems isolated today, won't be for long.
Lots of young families with children here, and most all of the neighborhoods are child-friendly and family-oriented. Many of the parents seem happy with the schools.
I am retired. My husband still works, and our daughter is in college. Still, we love the area for all it affords us, including easy access to anywhere we choose to be. Once I540 opens, it will be even easier to get around.
I live not too far from there, my sister in law and her family live in Amberly. I think the whole area and nearby Morrisville neighborhoods are great places to live and raise kids. The elementary schools are excellent--Alston Ridge, Highcroft, Mills Park, Green Hope, Carpenter....but watch where you are assigned for middle school, because it seems to make absolutely no sense whatsoever (Though that could change soon).
Just read the 540 road plans carefully and make sure your house isn't situated on a splendid view of it. And I do think once the economy picks up you will see a ton of development here. When I first moved from a more densely developed area I was a little freaked out, but what I've learned is that while I may have to drive 15min to places I only go occasionally, the places I frequent (locally owned restaurants, grocery stores, drug stores, fitness center, that sort of thing) are within walking distance or a 5-min. drive.
copy and paste the text in quotes below in a Google search and you will get the results that will provide more information on the planned development for the Hwy55 and O'Kelly Road project.
Google search: "is designed to meet the needs of an attractive, growing community that includes area residents as well as the Research Triangle Park workers"

I'm near Carpenter Firestation and Yates Store Rd. I like the area a lot. I moved from N. Raleigh knowing it will be a little "out there" for a while until the area is built out. The back ways to Durham/Southpoint are a plus and I appreciate the quick drive to RTP for work.
Hopefully I'll have a cheaper option for groceries. Going to Harris Teeter every week is going to make me go broke!
For what it's worth here is the website for that mixed-use complex they are planning to build around 55 and 540. They still have on there an opening timeframe of Summer 2011, but that's only a year away and far from started. So we'll see??!!...

I agree! We need more options out this way- you do ok when HT has the triple coupon deal or in a pinch when you need something right away.
Otherwise I go to Wal-mart or Super Target.
