The two largest credit unions in the area are Coastal Federal and State Employees.

NC SECU has great rates if you qualify to join. I've been very happy with them. A little technologically behind, but they serve their members well.

I belong to both (former state employee who married a former IBMer). SECU has better rates overall and great customer service, but is a little technologically behind, as huckdisc said. Coastal probably has the edge on technology and has a better credit card reward system, but rates aren't quite as good generally. Everyone uses a bank/CU differently, so just go online and check out the kinds of accounts & rates & deals they offer. Both have really good customer service.

I'm a member of SECU and don't understand the "technologically behind" comment... what am I missing at SECU that I would have somewhere else? Just curious...

I use coastal for some minor stuff, but I will say their customer service is horrible, but the rates are good.

Website is much less sophisticated than other banks or credit unions. And I've discovered over the years that the programming of their ATMs and systems is not very sophisticated either. Example: if I deposit an out of state check for $1K in my account at other banks, that $1K is frozen in my account until the funds are received from the out of state bank, but the money I already had in it is accessible. At SECU, if I go to my ATM and try to withdraw the $3K I already had in my account, it won't let me because of how the code is written. I've complained about this but they flat out told me that it's too hard to change the code so they just left it. SECU employees have told me that their internal systems are really clunky too. Just stuff like that. The interface for online bill pay is not as nice as Coastal's either. None of this is major, but just worth mentioning. Some people pay a lot of attention to a company's online presence.
