I'm a twenty year old college student currently living in Southern California. My housing arrangement will be changing in the fall, and I'm considering relocating to the Rapid City area with some family. I wont be able to live with them permanently, though. I'll probably have to find other arrangements within six months or so. So I was wondering if anyone familiar with the area could share their insights on what life would be like for me. Specifically the availability of low paying student-type jobs and cheap student-type housing and whether it is reasonably possible to live off of a student-type job (assuming I found a roommate or two), and any schools in the area, universities or junior colleges. I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks

I can't speak on anything else in your post as I don't live in SD, in fact I live in California, but I'm applying to school out in SD.

I have just fallen in love with Black Hills State University (Black Hills State University - Spearfish, South Dakota) I'd check it out.

I also don't live in SD, living in New Jersey right now but am going to be attending Black Hills State University in the fall. It's in Spearfish, as Kayy911 said, which is about 40 miles from Rapid City.

I took a visit in May and actually found that I liked Spearfish a whole lot better than Rapid City, sure there is more to do in Rapid but living in a big city my whole life I guess I find smaller cities a lot nicer.

Housing is pretty cheap out there though, I don't know how it is in Southern California but in NJ for a two bedroom apartment you will pay anything from 1000-1400 a month. As opposed to anything between 350-750 in parts of SD.

That's about the extent of my knowledge on the questions you asked though, sorry haha.

John Grady is right. Spearfish is an absolutely wonderful, beautiful neat town. You won't find much to do there compared to Rapid I suppose, but the trade off in my opinion is worth it. In Spearfish the air seems to always smell of pine. It smells SOOOOO good. The town is extremely clean because the residents love their town and take very good care of it. If you broke down on the side of the road, you wouldn't wait long until someone stopped to offer a hand. Living is Spearfish in my opinion is going to be more expensive than Rapid. This town is HIGHLY desired to live in. So things are naturally more expensive. I suppose if you had a roommate or two, it wouldn't be a problem. There is probably more jobs to find in Rapid simply because it is a bigger town. Again, in MY opinion, Rapid is easier to handle the winters that Spearfish. It seems that Rapid is in this little "bowl" where the worst of the cold and snow seem to go around. Spearfish is higher in elevation that Rapid, so I believe there is more snow/wind/cold there. I am sure someone that lives there will chime in to correct me if I am wrong on that. I was very fortunate to live in Rapid last summer for six weeks. I worked for the cable company (Midcontinent Communications) and they had me assigned in Spearfish almost the whole time I was there. I LOVED working there and I would move back in a heartbeat if my situation would allow it!

Good luck! No matter where your at in the western side of SD, you'll love it!!
