Spent a few days driving around the Hills last week in my 2 wheel drive van, Im in love and I want to move out there
Thankfully the weather was great last week, but those mountain roads look like they would be a challenge in the winter and 4 wheel drive can get you really stuck
Is a daily commute in and out of there to Rapid on 16 or 44 doable in the winter???
Im in Colorado Springs visiting my brother, but Im gonna head back out to the area for a few more days to look around before heading home, the weather is supposed to be good the next few days
Doable but occasionally difficult. A co-worker commutes from Custer to RC every day. It takes her about 45 minutes each way in good weather. It is relatively uncommon for her to miss work due to weather conditions, but she did once get into a nasty accident involving a bridge that had iced over. Keep in mind that the further you have to drive the more hazards you will contend with, whether it be ice or deer (and there are a LOT of deer out that way).
Lead would be the most treacherous commute IMO. They get much more snow than the rest of us. Twisty roads, too.
I have a friend who makes the trip from Rapid to Lead for the last 4 years. They now have a house in summerset. But weather played an issue at times.
The central and southern hills don't get the snows that the northern hills gets. But there are times in the winter when it is no fun. It is 26 miles from Rapid to Hill City and 40 miles or so from Custer to Rapid. Highway 16 is a great road. It is well maintained. I like both Hill City and Custer. But the commute would get old IMO. I now have a 40 mile round trip... If you are used to it and have allow extra time in the winter when roads are bad, it is easily doable.
Thanks I made the trip in there in the dark last night, yes I saw a few deer, must be why a lot of people have those grill guards on the front of their pick ups
It was about 6:30 PM or was it 7:30??? my phone switches back and forth from central to mountain time as I drive around here
Anyway there was more than a few people coming up Im assuming returning home from work...
Supposed to be another nice day, gonna go look at a few places, Black Hawk, Hermosa, and Keystone look nice, Lead is beautiful but I donno....
Winter weather has been great here so far compared to Chicagoland
I live halfway between Rapid and Hermosa, It is an excellent area. Winters are more bearable south of rapid. 79 is a great stretch of road.
If I could work from home or didn't have to be in Rapid every day I'd pick Custer or Hill City as a place to live. If I wanted to be more isolated I'd pick Rochford.

It's a trick. This is fantastic but very atypical late December weather. Enjoy it, but winters are not like this all the time. It's certainly not unheard of for us to get a few nice days like this, but usually not for such a long stretch.
