Your best bet is heading east. Good hunting areas start north of Philip or down by White river with areas heading east.

Near Rapid you have a good selection of big game animals. Upland and waterfowl are more common the further east you head.

I disagree with the previous poster.

Pheasant hunting north of Philip is lean in fact all of west river is mostly lean. Some years there are clusters found way south in Gregory Co. along the westside of the river and I've found good luck on the Rosebud which includes the White River area. But anywhere east of the Missouri River is where you want to be.

As far as big game south of Rapid, I saw some horses standing near a soddie once--hahaha--but you can't figure them for big game. Anyway, the poster did not ask about big game animals.

So does the bird hunting completely suck around Rapid City? I don't really want to drive 150 miles to bird hunt every weekend, of course I will if I have to. Also, are there good draw odds for big game hunting in the area other than deer and antelope? Thanks for your help guys, I really appreciate it!

Close to Rapid it does.

Big game you have best of the hills and prairie for deer. Odds of getting a deer tag are pretty good. Antelope is okay. If you really want some fun there is also a Mountain Lion season. It just closed this year. The quota was reached.

Elk season is bit more difficult to get a tag. Mainly the odds of drawing are not as frequent.

If you want upland birds head east.

Yesterday saw the first pheasant just 3 miles west of Cottonwood on Highway 14 (east of wall.) And several more pheasants the rest of my trip.
