It really is just fog. But if the automated sensors that now report the weather and sky conditions around the country indicate fog and the corresponsing temperature is below 32F (0c) it will indicate freezing fog. In this case....the dew or water droplets that creates the fog is present instead of having that wetness to the grass or windshields...will be frost or a thin layer of ice. Sometimes....fog can make the roads damp and in the case of freezing fog it can be the roads slightly slick.
It's really just a very heavy frost. If the next morning is sunny, it is a beautiful sight to behold.
