You remember the arches
You know where the Village Inn and A & W and the KP Drive-inn were
You remember the drive-inn movie screen on St. Pat getting blown down in a tornado
You remember the Apollo Attack Ship and Marine Life Aquarium
You remember $1 movie night at the Elks
You remember your first concert at the Civic Center
You went to the Barbarian before it was The Director
The movie theater was IN the mall
The mall food court only had stand-up tables
You cruised 8th street
Or if you were too cool for that you went to falling rock
Your mom took you to get a suit at Haggerty's in Baken Park
Downtown had Duhamel's and Designers Too
You remember a band called Asia -- that was not THE Asia

Anybody want to add theirs?

You remember a movie theater that was across from downtown Hardees called the Rapid
You remember an FM radio station called KKMJ (currently kkmk 93.9) and a promo for "Hiney Wine"
You remember when 9th grade was not held in high school, it was considered junior high
You remember that the pitchers of the 3.2 beer that they served at the Barbarian could still cause you to get VERY drunk.
You remember the 7-11 on East North Street. (or 7-11's) in general.
You remember being able to go up to Mount Rushmore at lights out and having the rangers be cool with you hanging out in the parking lot.

(Is the Apollo attack ship you are referring to the Rocket Slide that was in Sioux Park?)

(Great thread BTW awesome nostalgia!)

The Apollo Attach ship was a goofy tourist trap up on HWY 16 -- kinda by where Zion Lutheran is now. We used to hang out there and drink beer.

I remember KKMJ! And 3.2 beer :-)

Do you remember who had the jingle: I got the munchies, I got the munchies and I know what I'm gonna do . . .

Also Taco Johns were little shacks where they had no tables, you just got your tacos and left.

Wow! I was little in the 90s and I remember most of that stuff:
The Arches were where Common Cents and Holiday Inn are now. There used to be NOTHING past the hospital and everyone thought it was stupid to build the hospital so far from downtown.
We used to go to KP Drive In for french fries after Harney League games.
My favorite dolphin at Marine Life was Josie and after it was torn down the rubble was there for years.
$1 movie night at The Elks was AWESOME!!! It only had one screen and it wasn't stadium seating.
My first concert was 98 Degrees in 1998 on Halloween!
I used to cruise 8th freshman year, then gas got higher.

Sooper Dooper had THE BEST fried chicken in town.
Canyon Lake Park never had the boardwalk or gazebo island.
You could slide the spillway at Canyon Lake.
Fizz Kids was the best place to drop off kids for the day.
Qzar had laser tag in the mall.
Qdoba was called Zteca.
WalMart was where Sam's is now.
Schlotzsky's was on West Main now it's on LaCrosse.
Fjord's was THE ice cream parlor to go to.
The hospital was just the tower and there was NOTHING else around it.
There was no Southwest Middle School or Corral Drive Elementary.
RAPID SKATE was still open!
Roosevelt Pool was where the ice rink is now and it was the only pool on the eastside.
Downtown Radisson was Hilton.

God there's so many more...

Can't place the jingle. Sorry! Congrats on making the Journal business blog! That is how I found this thread in the first place. My attendance to this web-site is sporadic at best.

Is Shakey's Pizza still in Rapid or not? I can remember going through in Rapid in 1997 and seeing Shakey's and Sioux Falls had one back in the 1980s. When I went to New Orleans in 1997 for a church conference and my church youth group in Tea went with the youth groups from Lennox and Rapid City in a Jackrabbit bus down there, I asked a person or two about Shakey's Pizza.

Other things I remember of Rapid when visiting there in the 1990s include seeing the Alex Johnson motel for the first time (1991) and thinking that it was a very tall and neat building and the McDonald's on the exit that used to lead directly to Ellsworth AFB.

Rapid City, even though I visited it on six or seven occasions in my 26 years, is a neat and interesting city. Thinking of it makes me want to take a quick weekend trip out to the hills this spring.

Shakey's changed to Gangbusters in the late '90s and had two Rapid City locations then finally just closed down. The south location is right next to Sonic which was Burger King before. I remember going to that McDonald's at the Ellsworth exit on the way to Sioux Falls and Omaha. There's still a Pizza Hut out there too but I think they just deliver now. We used to get pizza before a big soccer roadtrip.

I remember Shakey's and mojo potatos. Those were great. I also remember when the happy jacks casino was happy joes pizza. I also remeber mister donut and bonaza steak house. The old court at the mall was just that hallway with the stand up seating. If anybody is in Grand Junction their mall is the exact same floor plan as the rushmore mall and still has the old food court and also had the movie theater at the end of it. Does anybody remember that before Kmart was expanded it still had a grocery store at one end. So really kmart had beat Wally word to the punch in selling grocerys.

How could I forget Bonanza? We used to frequent that place growing up. Peppy's Pizza was Gigglebee's and it was Rapid City's largest arcade. The Ranch was awesome because it had go karts, bumper boats, and mini golf. Ithink it still operates in the summer but it's been years since I was there. We used to go to the Waterslides a lot too.

TCI Cable was the only choice for cable too and their office was a tiny building behind KMart.

I lived out there in the 70's and early 80's - I remember Shakeys and Happy Joes! I also remember Daisy Dell and Snow White Drive Inn...There was no McD's near the base, but there was a great place off the exit that sold broasted chicken - had a big white chicken shaped sign! We spent many hours at Rapid Skate, and I remember going down the spillway, too! I remember a lot about the mall - I was a little mall rat in the summer while my mom worked in the salon in Penney's (that was back when it was safe to let an 11 year old run the mall all day by themselves!). So much has changed since I have been there, but I can't wait to get back out there and see all the new things!
