Oh my!!!! Guess it's moving westward, huh? We're still doing fairly well on this side of the state, but there have been several lay offs and a couple of closings. Some places are still running 32 hr. weeks rather then 40.
The ONLY good thing that I can say about this is that I've been hearing news reports that by early next year, we should be seeing an upward swing. That's not too comforting for the people who just lost their jobs now though.
I can't imagine what people are going through in some parts of the country cause they've been hit hard in some areas. Actually, I can imagine cause I remember the early 80s.

Sanmina-SCI has been hurting for years, I am surprised they managed to hang on this long. I think the economy was just the last straw.

I haven't heard of too many others. I know GE laid off a few workers too but that's all I've really heard. I hope it stays that way too!

At Target the other day this mom and her little girl 3 or 4 years old were shopping. The girl asked her mom, why are we buying tape mommy. Can we afford tape? The mom said I need the tape for the garage sale. Then the little girl said "Oh, ok, everythings going to change. In a couple months everything will be different. Where will we move to mommy?"
Then the mom explained to me her hubby works for SCI. That little girl sounded so adorable, yet it is so sad.

Rapid Packaging Company started to lay off employees in December who worked in the SCI room. Providing Boxes, pallets, bags, and inserts. for shipping their servers and circuit boards in. the plant may close if things don't turn around.
Going from 9.00 + an hour to 200 a week barely pays your rent
selling everything you own and cashing out your retirement, if you have any. is the only option for many.
their are not many jobs available now in rapid city I have applied to over 50 businesses myself. thew want recent Graduates, not old fogies as I was told at one interview at a local business.

HMMM, if you were told that outright, it sounds like you'd have a pretty good case for age discrimination. It may be hard to prove cause I doubt they'd admit to it, BUT there's a strong possibility that they've told more older people the same thing. I'd ask around.
