I agree with others on the Spearfish and Belle suggestions, but if you like the mountains and can deal with the snow, Lead SD may be an option (less wind and slightly more moderate temps, shorter growing season). It is immediately adjacent to Deadwood for night life with far less tourism - it does get a good deal of outdoor enthusiasts that come from all around - they usually stick to the two main highways coming thru town so the residential areas remain fairly quiet and has approx 2,500 people. Lacks shopping compared to Spearfish but it makes up for it in recreation IMO.

Lead is the place to live if you like SNOW. Lead gets lots of snow and is very hilly.
Lead does have a long history as it was a company town for the Homestake Mine. It is now home of a deep underground lab.
I'm enclosing some links for you to review, if you so desire.
Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. I think I'll head up to Lead, Spearfish, and Belle Fourche next week and try to make a good decision. Of course, don't blame me if I happen to end up on a blackjack table in Deadwood by the end of my visit!
