Yes, Ellsworth is active. There is usually a fair amount of B-1 traffic. Occasionally you will see a B-52 flying about. Practicing low level runs and maybe a few touch and go landings.
I actually saw and heard some B1s taking off this morning. Is morning or afternoon better. I found a few vantage points on the dirt roads surrounding the base, but is there a good place to watch planes take off and land? My wife and I are military aviation geeks. Thanks!
In Rapid City, are there noise issues with the B-1 bombers from Ellsworth AFB? In Tucson we were never bothered much by the A-10's, but now the Air Force base has new fighters that are extremely loud. We are 15 miles from the base and it's still a problem. I don't imagine Rapid City Regional Airport is much of a problem due to limited number of flights. What about Sioux Falls and their airport? Thanks in advance.
I don't live in Rapid City but have lived near O'Hare in Chicago so I do 'get' what you're saying and I do empathize but short of moving I don't think there is anything you can do but try and get use to it.
I know the original post is old, but I'll answer regarding my perception in 2019. Im on the south side of Rapid, by the new Walmart, and rarely notice noise from the base. You can hear them fire up the engines at times but you get used to it, and its not that loud from here anyway.
I can tell you where you don't want to live. Near a Marine Corps air station. They fly Harrier jets and think nothing of flying low and slow over the nearby subdivisions.
