HI,
My hubby and I are thinking about moving to Rapid City. We have two children, 10 and 7 yrs old. We are from North Dakota, about 75 miles SW of Fargo.
We are about tired of living in a smaller town, the town we live in is about 2500 pop. Anlyways, it's just too small for us... We'd like to move to SD because it's a bit warmer there in the winters. The winters in ND are really hard on a person, between the temperatures and all the snow we get here it's very depressing, and the summers are very hot, humid, and very BUGGY!
I own and operate and Tanning Salon and Fitness Center, i love my job but I want to be able to offer more services, so I'm planning on going into Cosmetology in Rapid at Headlines Academy... My hubby is employed at the Bobcat Factory for the past 9 yrs and is also ready for something new...
We will be going to the STurgis Bike Rally and while we are there we are going to check out Rapid a bit more...
What is the sales tax % in Rapid? I heard that it's at 11%!!!
Anyways, anyone with info on Rapid could you please tell me abit of what the weathers like there in the winter?
My plans are to move there, go to school, and open up a day spa and salon.
Thanks!
Angel
You may want to try this for a weather comparison. Rapid is quite a bit warmer then Fargo is. I didn't know your exact city, but this should hit it fairly close.
As far as sales tax, I'm thinking it's more like 7%, but we do have members who live in Rapid and could give you the exact number.
Thanks so much for your response! Your'e right, Rapid is quite a bit warmer in the winter months than Fargo, ND...Thanks for that, my hubby was quite excited to see that comparison.
Can you tell me some of your newspapers you have in rapid? Do the papers have a website that I could check out online?
Sure. There are a few newspapers out that way. The Rapid City Journal is the one you'd probably be the most interested in. There's another one called the Hill City Prevailer (Hill city area)and there's also the Black Hills Pioneer. (Spearfish area)
I live in southeastern So. Dak. and the Hills area has a lot nicer winters then we have over here, too. I'm still hoping that Busy or UncleHarley will come along cause they live out there and could give you a lot of good info.
I live in Rapid City and I can tell you that tax is NOT AT 11%!
It is 6% and only 4% if you shop outside city limits.
Tanning salons and training centers have really taken aholod of the Rapid City population and I can say that everyone i know belongs to a gym and TONS OF PEOPLE TAN! So, your business should do fairly well here.
Winters are relatively dryer here than anywhere else in the Dakotas and snow does not fall too often. If it does, it is usually due to a big storm and it melts right away. Also, it is never too cloudy in Rapid City and winters are very pretty here.
People are very friendly here too and Rapid City is not too big and not too small. We have everything you'd really need.

Thanks Everyone for your responses!
I've been lurking on this forum and I'm reading that wages are lower.
My hubby works for the BObcat plant in gwinner, ND and he's been there for 8 yrs. now and is making $20/hr along with benefits and 401k... Is there any plants in rapid that pay about that? Can you name of some factory plants that he may be able to look into for a job?
I'm planning on going into Cosmetology there at the Headlines Academy School of Hair, have you heard much about that schools reputaiion...
Also, I have two children, 5th grade and 1st grade, what are the school like there? I'm sure that they are good, but coming from a smaller town are the schools there so big, I'm hoping that my kids will be able to adjust easy...
I actually have gotten my hair done at headlines several times - great prices and they do good work seems like a nice place! I'm sure you have the link but here it is.. Beauty School,Salon,Cosmetology,Massage, Rapid City, South Dakota you can go to the rapid city school district page to find out about middle schools - Rapid City Area Schools the average student to teacher ratio in the elementary schools is 12.6/1
this link will give you lots of relocation info including tax info, major employers, etc
Relocation Information (http://www.rapidcitychamber.com/relocation/index.htm - broken link)
What grades are in the elementary school? is it K-5?
Also, what do most parents do with their children after school is out for the day and they are still at work? Are there buses to take them to daycare, etc?
I've never lived in a larger city before, just curious on how that works...
after school, many kids go to afterschool day care programs - some of them will pick the kids up
I pay about 115.00 per week for full time center based childcare for my little one - this includes meals This was a great surprise for us because it was about $50 a week less then in Denver
wow, that is actually pretty cheap...
I'm going to be in school until 4:30 each day, so I'll just need someone to pick them up and bring them to daycare until I get there.
For some reason I was thinking that daycare was going to be really expensive there.
Thanks once again~!
