I'm a realtor and let me tell you, the last 3 years have been super rough on me, and alot of agents I know. Okay.....I cant answer this question because it's kind of a catch 22. On one hand, yes.....I'll do anything to get the listing right now even if it means cutting my percentage down. On the other hand, I'm still paying the same amount of money on all my advertising. I'm paying the same for my office expenses. My realtor fees from our MLS have actually went up, and I could go on and on. Also, the worst thing is I get people coming in making ridiculous offers that my clients could not take even if they wanted and actually makes my clients furious when they make the offers and I HAVE to present all offers even if they are insulting. This is alot of wasted gas, paperwork and time for someone looking for a steal...not a deal. Not that I blame them, nows a great time to buy. No one's cutting me any deals though. I'm interested to hear what other realtors have to say about this.

There is no such thing as a "customary" percentage.

Honestly - compensation spans the specrum

People think in todays market agents should reduce their commissions. This is the same argument when times are good.

In todays mess, we should probably charge more. It's more difficult today to be an agent and in what we need to know, not easier.

So I vote for lets charge 20% more.

There's no such thing as a "customary" percentage is right, as stated above. Considering most sales people in other industries make considerably more than 10%, usually 25% I don't think our single digit fee's are too much.

So that means I can shop around to see which realtor has the lowest percentage commission...
or do they normally change the same in a given area ?

You can shop around, but you usually get what you pay for.
