I get a bunch of these calls, and they're not always telemarketers either. They call, don't leave a message.
Then you call back wondering why this stranger called, and then they want to discuss some hefty matters.
A voicemail would have been appropriate.

Are grownups still afraid of talking to an answering machine?

Probably 8 calls a day. I ignore them at this point, as 85% it's some guy in Kansas trying to sell me bad leads.

Be careful, I've read that sometimes when you call back you get routed to a toll line in some far off country and you end up running up a large bill. Probably that is just for land lines. I never call back unless the number is one I know.

if it's a non-local area code number and they can't leave a message, they didn't really need me. or, i didn't need to hear from them.

This is so aggravating. Especially if it's a local number. I quit calling these phantom people back. If you can't leave a short message then it's not important and I don't sweat it anymore.

My theory is that if the caller is unwilling to leave a message, the call isn't important enough for a callback.

These days, so many people only have cell phones and often just continue with the same number they had when they lived in another state. So the non-local number part if your decision should really be eliminated.

you'd need to get the telemarketing calls I receive from all over.

the ones that are routed through a local area code but are really telemarketers in another state are the worst.

The point remains, no matter who you are - leave a message. From time to time, I'll test my theory by calling back, and it has yet to result in anything other than a telemarketer. I do get "sign calls", and they always leave a message.

Because of the spoofing with phone numbers it's hard to separate the telemarketers from legitimate prospects. I end up answering all the calls and hanging up on the telemarketers.
