On a side note, I would think it would be difficult to move to a new area and try to sell the area. Personally, I would want an agent that knew the area VERY well (lived there for many years, not just a few weeks). Just wondering what you thought about that.

I have only been in my area for a year now and I think I know it very well...Learned A LOT while we rented an apartment...didn't have anything to do but drive around and get to know the area. (we rented until our home sold in another state) Then the home search we went on even furthered my knowledge of the area. And now that we have been in our home about 8 months, I feel like a pro in the area...I am a stay at home mom and finding things to do on a daily basis is our number one priority and that has just given me more knowledge.
I do agree that it can be more difficult for an agent not from the area, but the area I am in (Northern Virginia) is a very big turn around place...people always moving in and out. It would be difficult finding someon truely from the area.
Oh, and I think new agents to a new area must do some homework too before they try and sell. I did not get my license when we first moved as I wanted, and part of that is b/c I felt the need to make some connections and learn my area...That's why I joined two moms groups, a gym, a church, and just made lots of friends in general. We also purchased a Garmin so that I could look up homes for sale and then go and do a drive by... I may only be a year long resident, but feel like I have a lot to offer.
ANyway, I know you didn't ask me, but wanted to throw my 2 cents in...I think a good agent depends on the person and the commitment they put into it.
