Hi Serate, I did run the calculators and we would survive, and be better off once my wife got some students.
Ah see that's where we differ. I would want to do more than just survive. But I'm old and decrepit compared to you. lol

Well you probably made the best decision you could have for now. Like others have said, California will be there in 5 years. Maybe not this job promotion, but then again maybe a better one would pop up by then.
I completely disagree with everyone. The situation does suck, but rent out your house and go!!!!!
You only live once, it sounds like you don't like where you live at all and you are being offered a promotion in your dream location. If you rent while you are there you will have an opportunity to see if you like it as much as you think you will and want to permanently relocate, or if all the bad things people are saying hold true for you too.
You are young and have an opportunity. I would be gong in a heart beat.
As a previous poster said, you don't know what's coming down the line and you only have one life. When you get offered promotions in your dream location you take them!
First, put your mind at ease on renting the home. At the time you closed on your home, it was your intent to live there as a primary residence. Be sure to print and keep your emails and offers to interview for the promotion. Sure, the timing is bad, but you can prove this opportunity was presented after closing.
VA is there to assist veterans, not to punish them so that they not take advancement opportunities.
