Depends where you are. We don't typically use attorneys here (AZ), but some states do. Some states use them during contract preparation, and others just for processing escrow and closing (we use title companies).
Edit: I see by your profile zip code you are in MA. Attorneys are used there, will need to get someone local to respond.
Depends on your state. Is there an attorney review, do attorneys or agents handle the contract typically, etc. My state the offer and negotiations are usually handled by the agent. Once a contract is ratified it goes to the attorney so they can start the title search. Your agent should be able to advise you.
If the buyer is taking a mortgage, then he can choose a title attorney from the bank's approved list of attorneys to handle the closing, or he can pay his own attorney to handle the closing. Either way an attorney searches the title and arranges for title insurance. The bank's title attorney will still do the title search. No attorney review period. (If buyer is not taking a mortgage, a clear title is required as well as title insurance in both cases). I held a MA broker's license for over 20 years. Each state is unique on their individual requirements and laws.

I'm just going through the process now, but when I met with my LO for preapproval, she brought up the attorney topic then. She asked us if there was anyone we wanted to use specifically, we said no, she said "that's fine, there's a very good one we like to use."
Now we're at the point where our paper work is being sent out to the attorney and things are wrapping up. I didn't send anything out or do anything personally..
