Hi there, I'm buying a house for the first time and am trying to gauge how much I need to budget for a conveyancing solicitor. How much do they usually cost? Will there be any hidden charges? How can I compare prices and still get an idea of the quality of their service?
Where are you buying? That may influence an answer. We don't have "conveyancing solicitors" here. Sounds like you may be in an area where attorneys handle title transfers?
Yeh I'm writing from the UK were conveyancing solicitors deal with the legal side of buying and selling houses. I actually found a good website Property Advice Blog that answered most of my conveyancing-questions.

Not a very high amount. Unless the property & transaction is really unusual in some way... most are under $1000. $500 is typical.
And most of the work will be done by their paralegal assistants.

No. A long time ago the mean awful "guvmint" got it's hands on the process and developed the HUD Settlement Statement Form. Get a copy.

This is largely subjective. The RE attorney I recently used was recommended by a complete stranger that I stumbled across in passing. He turned out to be a semi-retired old hand at the process and did a terrific job, including a couple of extras and some advice, all for a modest fee.

I think the OP is asking about costs related to buying property in the UK, judging by his comment of being in the UK, and that the website he referenced is UK based. A HUD form will not be very useful.
OP the vast majority of posters here are US based and wouldn't know what you're asking.
