From KMSP: Your home is supposed to be your castle. That is, until the government needs to buy it for a road project. So, what's the fair price for your property when it comes to eminent domain? Maybe less than you think.
Situations like this are unfortunate and becoming more common. The county gave him $27,000 over and above market value for the house which took him from a negative equity position to zero equity. The man's net worth essentially went up by that amount. Sounds unfair but what would have been fair to all involved?
I have mixed feelings about eminent domain. Our country's road system would not exist if not for eminent domain. On the other hand I can't imagine being put in a situation where I had to give up my house.
