Glad you got a definitive answer. Unfortunately you had to learn the hard way of the consequence of paying property taxes late. It's not meant to be a pleasant process.

in cookcounty, Chicago I own my home but I'm late on this year tax bill can they auction my home?

In my community, property taxes would have to be delinquent for 3 consecutive years before a foreclosure can be forced on a home/property.

It depends "how late." You pay a late fee, but I think you have around 2 years until they start putting a lien on the home. Just pay it now with the late fee.

My MIL lives in Cook, and always pays hers late because she lives with her deadbeat loser middle aged daughter who won't give her a dime for any bills or rent. This is how I know. She has a senior freeze because her only income is measley social security, while my SIL gets $50K a year in salary. I'm really worried more about the county finding out and taking away her senior freeze and making her pay back taxes.

No one can tell you because we have no idea where you live. Look at your county treasurer's website for answers.
