I'm curious - what's the shortest amount of time you've owned a home (not an investment flip)? For example, you bought a home and then lost your job or had to move and you had to sell very quickly? How much money did you lose on it?

365 days. We moved into the house on our 9 anniversary, and out of it and into our next one on our 10th anniversary. It was because of a job transfer, and we didn't lose any money on it. One of my husband's employees got relocated twice in 3 months (at the employee's request), so he beat us by 9 months.

We agents occassionaly see people who get mulitple job tranfers. I've heard of several who were in a home less than 30 days.

1.5 years. Bought it. Got engaged and bought a new house with DH, then rented for a year, then sold it.

2 years - bought and then near the end of the 2 years my husband was asked to move to Hawaii for his job. Substantial gain. Sold at the end of 2003.

Thanks for the replies. It's something that might happen with a house we recently bought. Glad we won't be the first ones to own for such a short period!

1 1/2 years.
Bought it after selling one sooner than we figured it would sell and while looking for land and building a new one.

1.5 years as well.
We sold it for a profit in 2003.

I had a client who lived in their new home for about 6 months. They transferred in and later got a new job and transferred right back out. Personally, the shortest time I've owned a home was 1.5 years.

Back in the late '70s, built a house in a Raleigh, NC n'hood that was "far out of town" (at the time).

Decided we didn't like being that far out. It was DARK at night! Lived in it for 6 months, sold it, made a profit and then re-built similar house in Cary, NC! Used same wallpaper (yhea, I told you it was the '70s!), same flooring, same countertops, etc.
