Where is the best place to look for Islands for sale? I am hoping I hit the big bucks tonight with the lottery and an Island sounds like a nice place to be left alone. So any help is welcomed.

I always wondered how much it would cost to build my own island. Given that the water is only 50 feet deep within 50 miles of the east coast, it should be possible to have cargo ships dump or lower boulders in one spot and build them into a small island. The advantages are you can have the island anywhere you want and so long as it's at least 7 miles out in the ocean, you would be outside the United States territorial claims. You wouldn't have to answer to any country. Dubai's Palm Island cost 12.3 billion dollars to make.

Palm Island is also considerably bigger than what I had in mind, 5 kilometers by 5 kilometers, that's 269 million square feet of land or 6,177 acres. If we were to divide we get roughly 2 million dollars an acre. So with about 20 million dollars you could build yourself a nice 5 acre island before improvement costs.

You might say hey I could buy an island for less money, but where would it be? Probably hours by boat to the nearest town and a lot longer to a big city. Also you would still be under the tax authority of the local county, can you say property taxes. Just think if you built your island 40 miles from New York City in the Atlantic Ocean. You be less than an hour by helicopter for any entertainment you could possibly want, also you be well outside the Authority of New York City or state to tax you. Don't like the cold, you could have an island near Miami for your winter residence. The privacy you desire with sacrificing the convenience of civilization.

I rather buy my own country and lose the American citizenship and become a citizen of my own country, only to establish a embassy over here with a big huge mansion (no property tax) and party.... I wonder if its even possible to buy your own country where you have sole power...

Google David Copperfield's island in the Bahamas.....paid like 45MM for it (bought it from a Blockbuster Video founder who spent like 55MM developing it).

I saw a tiny island in a NH lake for sale for $75,000 with a modest cabin. Unfortunately, the only access was a deeded rowboat launch. Also, if the lake is down during a drought, people wearing hip boots could walk over to your island.
But there it was.
