I agree that you should decorate for the holidays, but decorate tastefully and minimally. Instead of zombies, ghosts and goblins for Halloween, decorate with fall foliage (if you get that in your area). For Christmas, you can decorate in a Pottery Barn Christmas style instead of "Santa Claus is Comin to Town!" You want your home to be warm and inviting, not cold and corporate.

Depending on your area though, if you want to put out a nativity scene or a Menorah (sp?), I don't think you should worry about offending people.

Decorate, but as many others have said, decorate tastefully. I think too many people get caught up in being politically correct (especially here in Northern VA!).

I wouldn't be put off by holiday decorations. But don't have the sales photos taken when the house is decorated. It's not hard to guess how long the house is on the market when you see a Christmas tree .... in August.

I was watching an episode of Sell this House (I made my husband watch so he would understand that my small requests to fix little things in the house weren't so much) and a woman had Easter stuff out and her fully decorated Christmas tree up... in August! It cracked me up... there is definitely a limit to how much you should put out.

So I guess I shouldn't put out my plastic snowman whose foot is missing..or all my plastic Xmas flamingos that flap their wings to music ...Eh..I never put them in my kitchen before because they clashed with my purple wall, but now that I am all neutral I guess I could put one in my kitchen. Maybe it will distract a potential buyer so they don't notice that I don't have granite!

Thanks for all the advice..It's hard to tell now a days in our VERY politically correct society what would offend and what wouldn't . I figured a pumpkin here and there shouldn't chase away a potential buyer.

My mother - in -law mentioned she saw on one of those *ahem* hgtv shows..that you should use the clear lights when decorating for Xmas. They are considered more tasteful I guess.

I really don't have Christmas flamingos..only thanksgiving ones..

If I saw those flamingos I think I'd wet my pants from laughing so hard at the sight of them!

I have a relative that leaves her christmas tree up all year long and decorates it for each holiday hearts and red/pink lights for valentine's day, shamrocks and green lights for st. patrick's day, etc. i love it but not if the house was for sale.

I decorated with mums and pumpkins, but skipped the real ghost/which halloween stuff. More for the season.

I love homes decorated tastefully for the holidays. It makes the home feel warm and comfortable to me. So I say decorate. Just do it tastefully.

And like KristyLiz said, for Fall us mums and pumkins.
