I sold my home and the new owners are renting the place back to me for a couple of months. Now they are laying claim to the veggies in my garden -- the ones that I planted, cared for, and weeded long before my home was ever for sale -- because, they say, the veggies are now their property.

In any case, I have to ask -- can they come into the yard and legally harvest my veggies?

It's called sharecropping.

Yes they can. For all sorts of reasons.

Probably. As said, it's petty but being polite is a different matter.

Those are no longer YOUR vegetables, they belong to the NEW OWNERS since you sold the home.

eca_05,

You have to let go. You sold the house and are technically only a renter. When they bought your home, the garden and the contents are part of that sale. Don't get emotionally attached to the vegetables, they were born to die anyway.

Yes, they can have the veggies. It's their yard now.

True enough, but consider it this way. If you are a landlord and rent a house to some tenants who then go out and buy seeds and grow a garden, then technically you have the right to come and take the harvest.

There is the law and there is common decency . . . good lord.

Reminds me of a funny episode in the compilation Make Way for Lucia, E.F. Benson.

Take it out of the library and try to forget the vegetables.

Seems to me this is one more reason to never rent back a house to a purchaser.

Unless they're refusing to allow you to share the harvest, I don't see how they're failing to show common decency.
You have a legal right to not do any work to maintain the garden if you choose. Although imo that would be petty.

If you rented a home to some tenants who then grew a garden, would you come harvest their vegetables?

Not the same. You sold your house, land, garden, trees, grass, landscaping, fences, etc. to the new owner. Done deal.

A renter presumably would add any new improvements only with the consent of the owner and there would be some agreement (written, spoken, or implied) as to terms of use, transfer upon your leaving, etc.
